Bringing home first baby boy
My four girls were 6, 5, 4, and 1 1/2 years old when I brought home my first baby boy from the hospital. The first morning I bring him down to the kitchen to bathe him in the large sink. The girls stand around and watch. A lot of staring, but no remarks . That is till Ginny, the 5 year old, points at Ken's navel. "What's that thingy?" she asks.
So I explain, staying within the limits of their understanding, and tell them that the "thingy" will fall off in a few days. "Oh" is the answer. Some more staring, and then, Ginny again:
"Whats THAAAAAAT?", pointing at the little appendage between the baby's legs.
I tell them about the difference between boys and girls. Boys have a penis, girls don't. "Will that fall off?" Ginny wants to know.
So much for all the explaining.
"No, that will not fall off"
She's rendered speechless. After glancing at Ken, then at her jeans..sort of:
"Mom, are you sure it won't fall off?"
I reassure her it won't. Silence.....then, indignantly:
"Well, mine did!!"

Contributor's Note
Ginny is now almost 48 Ken was killed on Apr.30/2006, losing control of his motorcycle. He was going on 41, and left a wife, and two small girls. I did have a second son who will be 36 this summer. I'm finally able to think of the little anecdotes from when they were children, and smile. Author: Joyce Thorburn
